IGUANAS
Iguanas are not ‘furry kittens with scales'. They are beautiful exotic animals that can grow up to 6' long and live for up to 25 years, but they have exacting requirements to ensure that they remain fit and healthy. Before adopting a ‘rescue' iguana, you need to ask yourself a few simple questions:-
Do I have enough room for a habitat large enough to accommodate the iguana?
Do I have the time to spend with it? (you will need to spend time handling it daily to keep it tame, clean its vivarium, and prepare food for it).
Are you willing to pay vet's bills should your pet need specialist medical attention?
Can you afford to provide a suitable habitat, light fixtures, heating devices, UV light bulbs (which need replacing every six months), food and vitamin drops etc?
Will I still love it after a few years when the novelty of owning an exotic pet has worn off?
Before you even consider adopting an iguana, please find out all you need to know about them. For a really good site on iguanas click here
And don't need buy an iguana from a pet shop (most ‘captive-bred' baby iguanas are actually ‘captive-hatched' the eggs having been taken from the wild). Common problems for captive iguanas are metabolic bone disease from calcium deficiency, mouth rot, respiratory disease, abscesses, and ulcers. Wild iguanas do not suffer from any of these illnesses.
There are many rescue centres in the UK with a variety of abandoned animals. D.W.A.R.F. takes in a constant stream of unwanted iguanas and it's a job to find them all homes. Iain Newby who runs the centre will be very happy to talk about iguanas with you to help you decide whether one would make a suitable pet, and he can sometimes even provide you with a set up. However, be prepared to be ‘grilled' on your knowledge of the species, and have your home vetted.

BOSC MONITOR LIZARDS
As of 24.2.09 DWARF has two monitor lizards in need of a new home. These animals are not your normal household 'pet' and need exacting conditions to live in with an experienced handler. To read all about Bosc Monitor Lizards click here and if you are still interested in rehoming the pair, ring Iain Newby at DWARF on 01702-219472, mob: 07729 852932.
BEARDED DRAGONS
These are very docile creatures and can make good pets for children, but they don't do much and can live for around 12 years, so don't take one on unless you're in it for the long term. Again, they need to be kept in exacting conditions to keep them at optimum health, and to set up a vivarium in the first place can be quite costly. To read all about Beardies click here
If you are interested in taking one of these lovely creatures ring Iain Newby at DWARF on 01702-219472 or mob: 07729 852932.

YELLOW ANACONDA
The Yellow Anaconda does not grow as large as the Green Anaconda, nevertheless, the female of the species can grow to an average 10' in length and can live for up to 30 years in captivity. Anacondas are definitely NOT FOR BEGINNERS. Keeping Anacondas can be very rewarding for the experienced handler, or a complete nightmare for the novice.

BOAS, CORN SNAKES, AXOLOTYLS ETC.
If you are looking for a snake, or other exotic, contact Iain Newby at DWARF who will probably have one. Iain's electric bill alone is £700 per month (heating elements and heat lamps are expensive when you have over 200!) and then there's the cost of a Dangerous Wild Animal Licence, copious amounts of food and vet's bills.
If you rehome an animal, it is usual to make a donation to the rescue centre to help them continue to do their good work.
