Hedgehog Sanctuaries

The Hedgehog has been voted the UK's favourite wildlife animal, but the numbers of hedgehogs living in and visiting our gardens are falling dramatically. We all need to do something urgently about this otherwise very soon they will be completely extinct.

EPPING FOREST HEDGEHOG CENTRE

This centre takes in and gives advice on how to look after sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs.  It also gives information on how to attract hedgehogs to your garden, what to feed them and warns of the dangers that hedgehogs face in your garden.

Hedgehogs are dying out so they desperately need help with food and shelter.  Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so any hedgehog seen out in daylight will need URGENT HELP, as will any hedgehog showing obvious signs of injury or distress.  In such cases, pick the hedgehog up, pop it into a box with food, water and warmth, and contact Epping Forest Hedgehog Rescue on 020 8508 4056, or your local rescue centre, for help and advice, or phone The British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801 (during office hours) or The Hedgehog Helpline on 029 2062 3985 (at other times). A young or small hedgehog that is left out on its own will not be able to survive and will starve or freeze to death. By providing them with food, water and warmth, they stand more chance of survival.

NEVER give cow's milk to hedgehogs

You can help save numerous hedgehogs by putting a small plate of dog or cat food or cat biscuits in your back garden every night, together with a bowl of water - doing this little thing could help prevent many hedgehogs starving to death.  NEVER GIVE COW'S MILK AS THIS CAN CAUSE ENTIRITIS.

The areas Epping Forest Hedgehog Rescue normally helps with are: Epping Forest and Surrounding areas, Loughton, Epping, Ongar, North Weald, Waltham Abbey, Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell and close areas.  They sometimes have elderly or disabled hedgehogs needing a safe place to live out the rest of their lives, if you think you have a suitable enclosed garden please contact them

The centre needs financial help urgently - could you make a small donation or raise funds for them?

Address any correspondence to:  Epping Forest Hedgehog Rescue, 45 Chequers Road, Loughton, Essex, IG10 3QE.
