Did you know............?

You can tell the age of a lion by the colour of its nose.  Lions' noses darken from pink to black as they get older.

Lions are unique for many reasons:-

  • They are the only cats with manes.
  • They are the only cats that live in groups (called 'Prides')
  • They are the only cats that hunt in co-operation with each other.

Researchers have found that if a lion is threatened with two invaders - one with a light mane and the other with a dark mane, the lion will attack the intruder with a light mane, suggesting that a darker mane is a sign of strength.

The racket that hyenas make when devouring prey is irresistible to lions - they know that all they have to do is drive the hyenas away to pinch their dinner!

Lions prefer to hunt at night - probably so that they can sneak up on their prey!

Kids beware!  In some countries, it is all too easy to break the law without even knowing!

Did you know that......................

  • In Alaska the law says that you can't look at a moose from an airplane (if you do this, just make sure no-one sees you!!)
  • In Corpus Christie, Texas, it is illegal to raise alligators in your home (and you would want to do this BECAUSE...........?!!!
  • In Miami, it is forbidden to imitate an animal (what, even a giraffe........?)
  • It is illegal to herd more than 2000 sheep down Hollywood Blvd. at one time (obviously, you can imagine the shopping chaos this could cause!)
  • It is illegal to take a lion to the cinema in Baltimore (so it's OK to take a walrus then???????).
  • It is illegal for cats in International Falls, Minnesota, to chase dogs up telephone poles (so what happens if they do....?)
  • In Texas, it's illegal to put graffiti on someone else's cow (quite right too!)
  • In Berkeley, California, you can't whistle for an escaped bird before 7:00 a.m (ahhhhh......... well, you wouldn't want to wake it up would you>)
  • And finally:-
  • In Atlanta, Georgia, it is illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp (oh bother, now where do I park my giraffe?)
