About Us

OK I admit it. Hands up. I love pets......

Whether furry, feathered, flippered or fanged, I love them all!.  How anyone can mistreat an animal is beyond my comprehension, but whilst most of us are a nation of animal-lovers, many are not.

The RSPCA has to deal with thousands of abandoned, abused, or simply neglected animals every year, but thankfully the future looks brighter. The Animal Welfare Act came into force on 6th April 2007, hopefully making people think twice about looking after their pets properly.

Since launching this website, my 'nuclear family' has changed shape several times.  Beardie, our elderly Bearded Dragon and his four year old stepson, Smeggie (so-named because he came out of an egg) are sadly no longer with us.  Sadly, Smeggie contracted an unspecified reptile disease and despite caring for him like Florence Nightingale, and extensive and expensive medical care, he didn't make it.  Beardie, definitely in his twilight years, lasted just long enough to see in the New Year and passed away on 1st January 2009.

Beardie left behind his live-in companion 'Hashmar' a Leopard Tortoise.  Still quite small, Hashmar lives in a 6' vivarium, but on the advice of my vet, my son cut the lid of the viv in half so that Hashmar could get lots more fresh air.  Hashmar is now very happy in his converted vivarium, however, our cat has now taken to sitting on top of it as the heat lamps and lights make it a warm place for a snooze.  This led to a little accident one day, however, when I heard lots of miaows coming from the direction of the viv, and realised they could not be coming from the tortoise (my powers of deduction are amazing!).  I went to investigate, only to discover that Amy had fallen in and couldn't get out!  She has now been through some Health and Safety training, and is managing to stay on the outside of the viv!!

Amy - our beautiful crossbreed Ragdoll pussycat is still living 'The life of Riley' & while I write is having a post-nap, mid-nap pre-nap cat nap!!.  She had a lot of problems with a loose nether end, & after a biopsy was discovered to have lymphatic cancer.  I was distraught & saw only worst case scenarios, but with the help of a wonderful vet (Kris at Ian Jobson's in Rochford), she has been put on a regimen of prednisolone for life & Leukeran tablets in cycles.  So far, touch wood, she has responded brilliantly & her recent blood results were way better than expected (long may this continue).  Because of her condition, she's now being spoilt even more than she used to be (if that's possible), & is now offered every possible creature comfort & more.............

Spoilt? Moi?!!

Alex, No. 1 son, having finished a 2 year National Diploma Animal Management course at Sparsholt College (where he got all distinctions), is now in his second year studying Zoology at Nottingham University. Having spent time at Malacca and Negara Zoos in Malaysia, last summer he went on an international student voluntary programme to study and monit Leatherback turtles in Costa Rica. Weighing up to 900 kg, for once he didn't smuggle a specimen home in his rucksack.  Where on earth will he go this year - in search of the Abominable Snowman or the Loch Ness Monster....?

If animals matter to you as much as me, then please sign a petition in support of The Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare - animal welfare charities are hoping to get 10 million signatures from the 192 countries represented on the petition!

The Universal Declaration is an agreement among people and nations to recognise that animals are sentient beings and can suffer, to respect their welfare needs, and to end animal cruelty - for good.

By signing the Declaration you are helping to establish the world's first international agreement on animal welfare.

The final destination for the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare will be the General Assembly of the United Nations.   Please sign up now by clicking here

As you're here, you're obviously an animal lover already and love your pets as much as I love mine.

I hope you enjoy this site - come back frequently, and tell all your friends to logon2pets!

Here's to happy and healthy pets!
